Hoya Care

Hoya Care Summary

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.
  • Can tolerate some direct morning sun; avoid harsh midday sun.
  • Low light = slower growth and fewer blooms.

Water

  • Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry.
  • Hoyas prefer to dry out between waterings.
  • Reduce watering in winter.
  • Avoid overwatering—roots are sensitive to rot.

Humidity

  • Enjoys moderate to high humidity (50–70%).
  • Many species tolerate average household humidity well.

Temperature

  • Ideal range: 65–85°F (18–29°C).
  • Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

Soil

  • Use a light, airy, well-draining mix, such as:
    • Orchid bark
    • Perlite
    • Coco coir or potting mix
  • They like semi-epiphytic conditions.

Fertilizer

  • Feed during spring and summer every 4–6 weeks with a balanced or bloom-boosting fertilizer.
  • No need to fertilize in winter.

Growth Habit & Support

  • Many are vining epiphytes and appreciate a trellis, hoop, or support.
  • Some compact varieties stay bushy without climbing.

Blooms

  • Needs bright light, consistent care, and sometimes slight root-bound conditions to bloom.
  • Do not remove the peduncle (flower spur); Hoyas bloom from the same spot repeatedly.

Repotting

  • Repot only when root-bound—usually every 2–3 years.
  • Overly large pots can slow growth.
